First-Generation Scholars Award

The new First-Generation Scholars Program opens doors by providing financial support and wraparound service for student who are the first in their family to access post-secondary education.


Eligibility

To participate in the University of Calgary’s First-Generation Scholars Program for first-in-family students, an applicant must:

  • Be an entering undergraduate student whose parent(s), legal guardian(s), or chosen family guardian(s) have never attended a post-secondary institution, either full-time or part-time, in Canada or anywhere in the world; or
  • Be a student who formally was a child or youth in care in Alberta or equivalent in another Canadian province or territory.
  • Be registered for full-time studies in a first-entry degree program in the current academic year (first time, first term). Second entry programs (e.g., law, medicine or vet med) and graduate programs are not eligible.
  • Not already have a post-secondary credential (degree, diploma, certificate, apprenticeship program or equivalent).
  • Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or conventional refugee of Canada.

  • $2,500

The application for the First-Generation Scholars Award is part of the High School Awards application that opens October 1, 2023, and closes March 1, 2024.

Notification

Recipients of the First-Generation Scholars Award will be notified by the end of April 2024. Notification will be sent to each recipient’s University of Calgary email address.

Receiving Award Payment

The value of your award will be applied directly to your tuition and fees for fall 2024 in early to mid August.
