Maintaining interest-free status

National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) online confirmation of enrolment

If you receive federal loan funding from a province or territory in the list below, confirm your enrolment with the National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC). This will ensure you receive interest-free status on the federal portion of your loans:

  • Alberta
  • British Columbia
  • Manitoba
  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Nova Scotia
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Saskatchewan
  • Yukon

You can also apply to keep your interest-free status if you:

  • Have outstanding federal loans
  • Aren't applying for additional funding, and
  • Are enrolled full time

To do this, complete a confirmation of enrolment through your NSLSC portal.

Note: You must submit these requests each term/year that you’re enrolled. They can be completed by the school as early as 30 days before the start of studies.

To complete on online confirmation of enrolment:

  1. Visit the NSLSC
  2. Log in or create an account
  3. Under the Manage a Loan section, select Confirm your Enrolment
  4. Complete the required sections
  5. Submit your request

Once you've submitted your request, your lender will contact UCalgary. We will confirm your enrolment status. This will notify your lender of your updated end-of-period study date. You should follow up with your lender(s) to make sure the changes made to your account are correct. You can call the NSLSC at 1.888.815.4514.

If you can’t submit an online request, you can submit a service request by selecting Submit Interest Free Request. Be sure to attached your Schedule 2. Once completed, you must mail your Schedule 2 to the NSLSC for processing.

If you’re enrolled part time and borrowed part time loans in the past, complete a Confirmation of Enrolment or a Schedule 2 through your National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) portal. This will keep your part time loans in interest-free status. Please note that previous full-time loans can’t be kept in interest-free status while you study part-time.
