Biography

Amrit is in a Bachelor of Health Sciences program with a major in health and society. She chose this program because it is inquiry-based, promotes critical thinking, and offers opportunities to get involved in research about social determinants of health. She is excited to pursue medicine at the University of Calgary. Eventually, she would like to specialize in cardiology to become a cardiologist, and also work on health policy on the government level.

Amrit had graduated from a high school in Ontario. Her top three achievements during her high school years were being Founder and President of OneHeart, a non-profit that combats social determinants of health to promote healthy living in vulnerable immigrant populations, leading a research project at York University to find novel therapeutic options to treat chronic inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, and being placed top three nationally for HOSA's (North America's largest health sciences programming) Health Policy Analysis event for analyzing Canadian mental health policy and proposing improvements.

She chose the University of Calgary for their undergraduate studies because of its research intensive focus, great campus experience with diverse clubs to get involved in, and because it offers many opportunities to get involved in the community to make the university experience more than just academics.

This award will help Amrit connect with a community of like-minded individuals to learn from their experiences and also help Amrit pursue medicine, which she has been interested in because it enables her to give back to his community.
