Schulich Leader Scholarship


Biography

Morteza graduated from Chinook High School in Lethbridge, AB. While there, he founded a non-profit called Lethbridge Cigarette Butt Initiative that created cigarette receptacles that were placed around Lethbridge to reduce cigarette butt litter. He also founded Chinook High School’s first Math Club to help promote math in school. Additionally, he was the Leader of Lethbridge High School’s international genetically engineered machine (iGEM) team, a competition where teams use synthetic biology to solve real-world problems, and their team won gold in Paris.

Morteza chose UCalgary because it offers many great opportunities that allow students to develop and grow. Morteza finds UCalgary is unmatched in the level of precision and research, particularly in the field of computer science.

Morteza is in the Bachelor of Science program majoring in Computer Science. He chose this program because he admires the research as well as being a childhood passion.

In the future, Morteza hopes to become a Software Engineer with a focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP). He’s had a fascination with NLP ever since he began coding.

For Morteza, receiving the Schulich Leader Scholarship will have a profound impact on his time at UCalgary. The award will provide financial relief, allowing him to focus on his studies and extracurricular activities.

Morteza is excited to learn about the potential of NLP technologies to create intuitive and interactive language learning platforms. He enjoys the idea of leveraging NLP to break down language barriers and make language acquisition accessible and effective for people around the world.
