Sir Ranulph de Glanvill was appointed England's Justiciar by Henry II in 1180 to complete the country's law reforms and oversee the writing of the first treatise on "The Laws and Customs of the Kingdom of England", which most scholars attribute to his nephew and later Justiciar Hubert Walter. The treatise remains the founding document of English common law that lies at the heart of the legal systems of all subsequent colonies and countries who arose under, or adopted their law from, Great Britain.
