Philippa M.

Biography

Philippa Madill attended Frank Maddock High School in Drayton Valley, Alta. Philippa was the Student's union president, National Philanthropy Day award for the Edmonton district in the Youth Division for over 10 years of philanthropic efforts with the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation and named a Paul Harris Community Fellow by her local rotary club. Philippa chose the University of Calgary because of their hands-on approaches to learning as well as their stellar programs and what they allowed her to do.

The University of Calgary is the only place that would let her do a dual degree in computer science and engineering and it was only because of their Bioengineering Summer Institute that Philippa was able to get into engineering at all. Philippa is enrolled in a dual degree program in computer science and engineering. She plans to specialize in software engineering. She chose this because she is really interested in robotics and the idea of creating something with nothing through code. Philippa hopes to work in robotics. Currently, she's fascinated by the idea of robotic prostheses. That would allow her to bring together her passions for helping people and robotics.

With Philippa's Schulich Leader Scholarship, she will be able to focus entirely on her studies without having to worry about balancing a job with her classes or the toll that could take on her mental health. For her, it is nice to have one less thing to worry about. Philippa is so proud to be a Schulich Leader and hopes to use her privilege to help break barriers for women in STEM.
