Program details

About 20 courses are offered. For details on courses offered click here.

UCalgary Law students are required to take 30 ECTS credits (equivalent to 5 UCalgary courses). 6 ECTS = 1 UCalgary half course (3 units)

Bucerius offers the unique opportunity to earn a “Certificate in Management and Leadership for Lawyers”, which students can enroll in as an optional module during their semester at Bucerius.

The Fall semester runs from September to December. The academic calendar is available here.

  1. Costs

Exchange students pay their tuition and academic fees to the University of Calgary. Other expenses are paid directly to the service provider.

The estimated living costs are around EUR 7000 for 4 months in Hamburg. For details click here.

Bucerius Law School has a small gym on campus, which students may join for a one-time fee of €50.

  2. Funding

Did you know that you can take your UCalgary funding with you on exchange?
Since you remain a degree seeking student at UCalgary while on exchange you remain eligible for any awards and scholarships you are eligible to receive from the university as well as student loans.

Our office administers the International Study Travel Grant for students travelling on approved UCalgary study programs that are credit bearing. The amount changes year to year as the money is split evenly between qualified applicants. Students may only receive the study travel grant once. Please see the exchange funding page for more information.

Bucerius Law School does not have on-campus housing, but they try to secure rooms in two dormitories in Hamburg. Accepted students receive information on applying for dormitory housing in May.

Bucerius Law School provides assistance in finding suitable accommodation. Often German Bucerius students who will be studying abroad sublease their apartment or room to international students. Further housing options and relevant information are provided once students are accepted to the program.

For more information on accommodation click HERE and scroll down to accommodation.

This exchange is open to regular, full-time law students at UCalgary, who have completed at least 2 full years (20 courses) towards their law degree, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 (B-).

An academic reference is required for a complete application.

Do I have to speak German?

No prior knowledge of German is required to participate in this exchange. Bucerius offers courses in English. However, a basic knowledge of German is recommended for everyday interactions.

Can I take a German course?

Yes! Bucerius offers German language classes during the program, which stretch over 20 lessons (2 x 90 minutes a week). A written and oral placement test for non-beginners will take place during the Orientation Program. Students may choose to earn 1 ABA / 2 ECTS credits with the German language course, although these do not count towards the 8 ABA/16 ECTS credit minimum required by Bucerius. The German course needs to be paid extra.

Which accessibility services are available?

Bucerius Law School tries to ensure that accessibility needs are met. The building, its lecture rooms and parking facilities are wheelchair-accessible. The city of Hamburg is continuously working on improving its accessibility services. The public transportation network currently offers low-floor buses and is taking measures to improve barrier-free access to its subways and train stations. http://buceri.us/accessibility

Diversity and inclusion:

Furthermore, Bucerius Law School values student diversity and is committed to providing a learning environment where there is no discrimination on the basis of gender, race, religion/belief, age, disability, pregnancy and maternity, sexual orientation, socio-economic background or other irrelevant distinction. No student should feel disadvantaged or excluded from class participation.

International travel presents challenges that may not be found when attending classes on campus. There may be a lack of resources, emergency services, hospitals, accessibility issues and/or demands on the physical and the mental self, all of which can challenge individuals when away from their usual support systems and structures. Adequate preparation is essential.

For this reason, it is imperative that you evaluate all aspects of your own physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual condition against the rigors of the particular global learning program you are selecting. If you are unsure of whether or not this program is a good fit for you and/or if you have any circumstances that could impede your enjoyment of the program, please contact us. Our Global Learning Advisors will be happy to assist in finding the best options for you and arrange any supports or accommodations necessary to ensure your success.

If you have or are seeking a certificate from Student Accessibility Services, you should provide this early to your Global Learning Advisor to ensure that the option that you are seeking can support your needs.

Please note: All participants must adhere to COVID-19 and other vaccination-related requirements for the destinations visited on this program. Failure to do so may have consequences such as being denied access to accommodation/housing, program activities, or to the host country itself.
