Summer Program at Rennes School of Business - Haskayne Only

Located in the French province of Brittany, the Rennes School of Business is an international school of management which teaches in English. It is triple-crown accredited (EQUIS, AMBA, AACSB), which is a designation held by only 1% of business schools in the world. Their school is also a member of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles (a highly selective French school association).

The summer program at Rennes offers several customized course sets, each focusing on accelerating students' knowledge of a specific business topic and its practical application. This is a great way to gain real world experience in your field of interest!

Program details

Summer exchange students at Rennes are given a choice of 4 summer programs. Each program revolves around a particular theme with complementary lectures & activities. There is some variation in the assessment for each program (some offer the equivalent of 3 UCalgary units, while others may not be enough to transfer back as a full course but offer students a certificate for completion that may have professional value) so it is recommended to read Rennes' website carefully.

The programs offered in Summer 2021 are:

For your application (the "courselist" section), please rank these programs in your order of preference.

Ensure you review your course selection with a Haskayne exchange advisor before leaving for your exchange to confirm transfer credit.

Haskayne undergraduate students must take their core courses at the University of Calgary. Students can take two senior commerce and/or non-commerce options, and/or a maximum of 2 concentration courses (not ACCT/PLMA). They are required to maintain full time status while on exchange.

Course conversion: 6 ECTS = 3 UCalgary units (1 half-course equivalent).

The summer programs offered by Rennes are all 2 weeks long, and have slightly different dates throughout May & June.

It may be possible for students to attend multiple programs if the dates don't conflict. Please speak with the Haskayne advisor for more information.

  1. Costs

Exchange students pay their tuition and academic fees to the University of Calgary. Other expenses are paid directly to the service provider.

Also, don't forget to include things like visas, insurance, vaccinations etc in your budget planning. All students will be covered by the national social security system which is free and covers some costs of medical care, but comprehensive travel medical coverage will still be required.

For the summer program, Rennes recommends the following budget:

    • Housing 20€ – 60€ / night
    • Food 6€ / meal at university cafeteria, 10€ – 30€ at city restaurants (some accommodations may include a kitchen in the room to cook for yourself)
    • Bus pass 13,80€ / week up to age 27 or 18,35€ / week if older than 27
    • Personal expenses, sightseeing, etc. 150€ / 2 weeks

Please Note: French visa applications may require travel to the Vancouver consulate to finalize your student visa and take biometrics as needed - please speak with the exchange advisor as soon as possible about whether this will be required for you.

Students considering significant rail travel in France may want to purchase a Carte Jeune via French National Rail (SNCF), which allows for reduced travel for every journey over a year.

  2. Funding

Did you know that you can take your UCalgary funding with you on exchange?
Since you remain a degree seeking student at UCalgary while on exchange you remain eligible for any awards and scholarships you are eligible to receive from the university as well as student loans.

UC International administers the International Study Travel Grant for students travelling on approved UCalgary study programs that are credit bearing. The amount changes year to year as the money is split evenly between qualified applicants. Students may only receive the study travel grant once. Please see the exchange funding page for more information.

Students on the summer program can choose from a variety of accommodation styles.

Click here to view the accommodation list from Summer 2020. A similar list is expected for Summer 2021; students confirmed on this program will be sent a detailed accommodations offer.

Haskayne students at UCalgary can ONLY apply for this partner through Haskayne, and must meet the Haskayne requirements for exchange.

Please note: French visa applications for Canadians may require travel to the Vancouver consulate to submit the documentation and take biometrics as needed within 3 months before departure to France, so students may not have access to their passports during that time.

Do I have to speak French?

Courses at Rennes are taught completely in English. It can be helpful for students to have some familiarity with French for daily life, but no prior knowledge of French is required for this exchange.

How can I travel around Rennes?

Rennes has its own airport. Students may also choose to fly into Paris; trains are run several times per day from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris to Rennes. For travelling during your exchange, there are a variety of options by road (popular destinations are Mont Saint Michel, Saint Malo, or Vannes). There are also harbour ports nearby (the closest ports are at Saint Malo, Cherbourg Caen or Roscoff) from which you can take a ferry to England.

International travel presents challenges that may not be found when attending classes on campus. There may be a lack of resources, emergency services, hospitals, accessibility issues and/or demands on the physical and the mental self, all of which can challenge individuals when away from their usual support systems and structures. Adequate preparation is essential.

For this reason, it is imperative that you evaluate all aspects of your own physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual condition against the rigors of the particular global learning program you are selecting. If you are unsure of whether or not this program is a good fit for you and/or if you have any circumstances that could impede your enjoyment of the program, please contact us. Our Global Learning Advisors will be happy to assist in finding the best options for you and arrange any supports or accommodations necessary to ensure your success.

If you have or are seeking a certificate from Student Accessibility Services, you should provide this early to your Global Learning Advisor to ensure that the option that you are seeking can support your needs.

Please note: All participants must adhere to COVID-19 and other vaccination-related requirements for the destinations visited on this program. Failure to do so may have consequences such as being denied access to accommodation/housing, program activities, or to the host country itself.
