Costs

Students on the UROP International program are responsible for making their own travel arrangements and for the cost of all travel and living expenses.

For living expenses, Aachen University recommends that students budget approximately €2000. This includes:

  • mandatory UROP enrolment fee (€285); the enrolment fee also provides students with a ticket for regional public transit
  • 3 months' rent (€220-300 per month, if living on campus housing)
  • meals, supplies, etc.

Funding

Aachen University will award 30 students with a scholarship of €1,850 to cover the majority of their living expenses.

Please note: As this program is not offered by UCalgary, participants on this program are not eligible for the UCalgary International Study Travel Grant.

Students on the UROP International program are offered a dorm in Aachen University student housing. The rent is generally between €220-300 per month.

If preferred, students may choose to arrange their own private housing.

Undergraduate students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 are eligible to apply for the UROP International program. Students in second- or third-year are preferred, but students in the first or final years of their degree are also welcome to apply.

Prior knowledge of German is not required; all instruction will be given in English. However, all students participating on the program are required to attend a German language course. Students with prior knowledge of German will be assessed upon arrival and placed in an appropriate course to match their language abilities.

To apply, students must fill out an application form (which can be downloaded from the website) and submit it along with their resume, official transcript, reference letter, and a personal motivation letter (or multiple letters, if presenting multiple research projects). Please click here for full details on the application process and required documents.

International travel presents challenges that may not be found when attending classes on campus. There may be a lack of resources, emergency services, hospitals, accessibility issues and/or demands on the physical and the mental self, all of which can challenge individuals when away from their usual support systems and structures. Adequate preparation is essential.

For this reason, it is imperative that you evaluate all aspects of your own physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual condition against the rigors of the particular global learning program you are selecting. If you are unsure of whether or not this program is a good fit for you and/or if you have any circumstances that could impede your enjoyment of the program, please contact us. Our Global Learning Advisors will be happy to assist in finding the best options for you and arrange any supports or accommodations necessary to ensure your success.

If you have or are seeking a certificate from Student Accessibility Services, you should provide this early to your Global Learning Advisor to ensure that the option that you are seeking can support your needs.

Please note: All participants must adhere to COVID-19 and other vaccination-related requirements for the destinations visited on this program. Failure to do so may have consequences such as being denied access to accommodation/housing, program activities, or to the host country itself.
