The purpose of this handbook is to provide MaPS with a single point of reference for information relating to the university’s policies, practices, and benefits important to their employment. These policies, practices, and benefits are continually evaluated, and may be amended or modified from time to time by the university, in its sole discretion.

The updated MaPS Employee Handbook will take effect on January 1, 2025, and will replace and supersede the previous MaPS Terms and Conditions, dated September 2021. The handbook will be formally reviewed by the university every five (5) years, or on an ad hoc basis as deemed necessary by the university in its sole discretion.

All policies, practices, and benefits referenced in this handbook are subject to and intended to comply with applicable workplace legislation, including minimum employment standards. Any part of this handbook that is invalid, unenforceable, or void by law or legislation, will be severed, and the remainder of the handbook will remain in full force and effect.

Please note: This handbook does not apply to MaPS working in Qatar. For more information please visit the University of Calgary in Qatar careers website.

FAQs

The updated MaPS Employee Handbook now includes streamlined language, enhanced clarity, and up-to-date links for more information. Since the terms and conditions of employment are detailed in individual offer letters, duplicative sections have been removed. The new handbook uses gender-neutral language and sections have been reordered to follow the natural employment lifecycle. Additional changes include providing five personal leave days per year and expanding bereavement leave to up to five days. The handbook also references relevant employment legislation and will now be reviewed every five years instead of three.

For the past few years, employees received an additional six temporary personal leave days annually due to wage freezes. However, since MaPS employees have received wage increases over the past two years, these temporary days are no longer provided. Instead, the standard personal leave days will be increased from three to five under the new Employee Handbook, with room for flexibility based on manager discretion.

No. You are provided with five days to attend to unforeseen personal circumstances. However, should you require beyond five days, your manager has discretion to provide an additional five days for a total of ten PLDs.

Instances of family illness within the immediate family will be captured within personal leave.

The previous MaPS Terms and Conditions were last updated in 2021 with a review committed to every three years. The updated handbook is now subject to review every five years.

Updates were informed by an extensive review, including a market/environmental scan, stakeholder consultation, and a comparison with U15 Group of Research Universities and local employers.
