Wireless Internet

AirUC-Residence, AirUC-Secure, and Eduroam are available in all Residence buildings, except Varsity Courts. VC-WiFi is the only wireless network available in Varsity Courts - it is not available elsewhere on campus.

For more information, or for our step-by-step wireless connection guides, select one of the options below.

AirUC and Eduroam

There are three wireless internet connections available in all Residence buildings, except Varsity Courts. We recommend connecting to all three networks, and allowing your device to automatically switch between connections depending on your location on campus.

  • The AirUC-Residence network is specific to Residence buildings, and is not available elsewhere on campus.
  • AirUC-Secure and Eduroam are campus-wide networks. This means they are available on campus and in Residence buildings. In addition to facilitating student connections, Eduroam also allows faculty and staff from participating educational institutions to securely access the Internet. Users simply use the credentials from their home institution to access this network.

Note: these networks only facilitate connections on primary devices such as phones and laptops. To connect secondary devices such as Game Consoles or Smart TV's, check out the AirUC-Guest network.

Check out the step-by-step guide to get your device(s) connected.

Wireless Beacons in Varsity Courts

Wireless beacons are affixed in select units in Varsity Courts. These beacons are intended to improve the connection strength in the unit of installation, as well as any immediately neighboring units. As a result, it is imperative that the beacons remain plugged-in at all times

Beacons are usually installed in the B sub-unit. A green light indicates that the beacon is operating correctly.

If your unit has a beacon installed, and you notice it is working improperly (e.g., interferring with your connection to VC-WiFi, or lit any other colour than green), please contact UService IT

Frequently Asked Questions

You may have received an email from UService IT and/or the Campus Service Centre asking you to ensure the wireless beacon in your unit is plugged in.

Even if the beacon already is, or has continually been plugged in, discrepancies may exist between the information automatically and routinely collected by IT servers, and the actual status of the beacon you have observed.

To resolve this, try the troubleshooting steps below:

  • Ensure the beacon has not accidently become loose from the wall socket.
  • If possible, remove the beacon from the wall socket and re-plug it in.
  • Once plugged in, ensure the beacon is is displaying a green light.
  • Inform IT you have done this, and take further action based on their response, if any.

Wireless beacons are installed in select units of Varsity Courts. The beacons are intended to the strengthen the connection in the unit of installation, and any immediate neighboring units. As a result, IT has strategically placed beacons only in the units that would maximize this purpose.

If you believe your connection would benefit from a wireless beacon, or you are having any issues with your beacon, please contact UService IT at 403-210-9300 or by submitting the 'Something is Broken' webform below.
