PhD Candidate

Valeriya Volkova

Valeriya Volkova completed her Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Health Physiology (Honours) in 2018 at the University of Calgary, where she worked under the supervision of Dr. Sarah Kenny in the Sport Injury Prevention Research Center (SIPRC). Valeriya first began working at SIPRC in 2015 as a research assistant testing and collecting data for multiple studies, and completed her honours thesis on internal training load measures in pre-professional ballet dancers at the Alberta Ballet School.

Valeriya’s research interests include capturing training load using wearable technology, musculoskeletal injuries, periodization in sport, and injury prevention, primarily in the context of aesthetic sport athletes. Currently, Valeriya is pursuing a PhD investigating the relationship between training load and injury in an elite dance population.

When not involved in research, Valeriya works with young developmental and competitive gymnasts as a NCCP Level 2 Women’s Artistic and Trampoline Gymnastics coach.
