Summary
•This research applies life cycle assessment (LCA) tool to evaluate the effect of substituting natural gas with alternative fuels on the life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) and criteria air contaminant (CAC) emissions from cement manufacturing at the Lafarge Exshaw facility. It also assesses the impacts of different potential treatments of the biogenic content of alternative fuels on GHG emissions.
•This research quantifies the likelihood and mitigation of dust explosions as an additional evaluation criteria under the LCA framework when selecting combinations of alternative fuels for cement manufacturing.
•This research utilizes the LCA tool to evaluate the influence of mechanical and durability properties of concrete, transportation distance and availability of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) on the GHG and CAC emissions from manufacturing concrete containing SCMs.
•This research utilizes the LCA tool to compare various GHG and CAC mitigation strategies in cement and concrete manufacturing to inform policy makers, cement and concrete manufacturers and government bodies the trade-offs that exist between these strategies.
