Dr. Derek Exner, MD

Dr. Exner is a Cardiologist, Professor of Cardiac Sciences, Associate Dean of Clinical Trials, and Canada Research Chair in Cardiovascular Clinical Trials at the University of Calgary. As Canada Research Chair, Dr. Exner is a world expert on arrhythmias, leading many large, international trials. He holds multiple patents related to using electrocardiogram (ECG) signals to evaluate cardiac structure and the risk of serious arrhythmias. Having been involved with many health technology start-ups in Canada and globally, he has obtained over $50 million in funding from peer-reviewed and industry sources during his career. He is also the Executive Director of the Integrated Management Platform to Accelerate Clinical Trials (IMPACT), a program run by Innovate Calgary that provides guidance and support to start-ups in the life sciences or biomedical industries that are conducting clinical trials for their products.
