UCalgary researchers study gender and race equity in field of cardiology

A team of researchers are tackling racial and gender inequities in the field of cardiology. The goal of the team is to create a more equitable, diverse and inclusive environment for both patients and care providers. The project revealed that there is a lack of diversity within some editorial boards of medical journals in the field of cardiac sciences.

In collaboration with United Way, UCalgary researchers and donors make a difference in the lives of many experiencing housing insecurity. Researchers at UCalgary are conducting a study that seeks to understand how to improve housing options for older adults with experiences of homelessness.

School of Public Policy on the rate of poverty and Alberta's economic future

Alberta's economy is seemingly entering a period of transition away from a high growth, high employment economy that is heavily reliant on the development of fossil fuel resources. Researchers at the School of Public Policy focus on understanding what the transition away from an energy-based economy might mean for people with low incomes in Alberta.

UCalgary scientists Dr. Jessica Rosin, PhD, and Dr. Deborah Kurrasch, PhD, at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) in the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) have discovered key linkages into how stress can influence developing brains and in different ways between males and females. Neurodevelopmental disorders are more prominent in boys in some conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity.

Equity, diversity and inclusion: workshop series

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) workshop series are a compilation of workshops focusing on key issues related to EDI within post-secondary institutions. Some of the topics covered this year included: understanding microaggressions: strategies for the classroom, challenging ableism in your teaching practices, and the urgency of intersectionality for addressing systemic inequities in higher education learning.

Work-integrated learning for neurodiverse students

Work-integrated learning for neurodiverse students

This initiative sets out to ensure UCalgary structure, environments and programs create and support equitable and inclusive pathways to work-integrated learning (WIL) for neurodiverse students. WIL is experiential learning activities that occur in a workplace that are part of students’ degree programs. Students are matched with an industry or community partner for internships, clinical placements, field experiences, or practicums.

Indigenous Haskayne MBA graduates Maria Big Snake, MBA’20, and Joel English-Dubois, MBA’20, come together to create a block week course called Partners in Reconciliation (OBHR 517 – Indigenous Peoples and Sustainable Development) in honour of the late Dr. David Lertzman, PhD. UCalgary's Haskayne community has come together to grieve, share memories and continue to learn from Lertzman's vast and impactful body of work.
