A SOCIO-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE ON SPORT CONCUSSION

Description:

A qualitative approach to sport-related concussion research fills an important niche in the Integrated Concussion Research Program (ICRP) and will also complement and align with the expertise of investigators in the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute. Through semi-structured interviews, we hope to gain a better understanding of the concussion experience from the perspective of young athletes, in relation to sport culture, familial relations, and popular understandings of concussion. Analysis of contemporary media coverage of sport-related concussion will provide insights into how the media tends to report on sport-related concussion, recognizing that the media can play an important and sometimes under-researched role in public health education.
