This work at the School of Public Policy evaluates fiscal and regulatory policies of the federal, provincial and municipal governments and proposes alternatives that improve the lives of Canadians. The research programs cover a wide range of issues, including taxation, income inequality, public sector deficits and debt, productivity, financial market regulation, livable cities and economic diversification. UCalgary’s Tech Fest brought together 48 local tech companies, Calgary Economic Development and over 1,100 students interested in careers in tech fields to leverage the impact of cross-collaboration between academia, industry and community partners. The event provided access to community resources such as Innovate Calgary, Startup YYC and Fuse 33 Makerspace to create a more holistic picture of how Calgary’s tech community functions.

Researcher works to help 'underbanked' Canadians who fall between the cracks. Some Canadians, some of whom are new to Canada, often have difficulty obtaining basic credit products from traditional banks to start businesses or navigate short-term financial difficulties, and may incur steep costs when sending and receiving money internationally. A new appointed chair of business regulation law in the Faculty of Law is looking at ways financial technologies can be used to provide low-cost financial products and services to these “underbanked” Canadians.

Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is an international event celebrating innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity. GEW brings together aspiring and inspiring entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, designers and innovative thinkers in over 165 countries on campuses and in the communities they serve.
