Green Building Highlights
Built upon the existing foundation of the former Nickle Arts Museum, the Taylor Institute offers a flexible and collaborative learning space at the heart of campus. Opened in 2016, this facility provides the opportunity to advance innovative teaching and learning methods. As a LEED Gold building, the roughly 5,000 square meter space provides a multitude of student study areas, and instructional and event spaces.
Wood
Wood is featured prominently throughout the building, and to ensure it was sustainably harvested, more than 99 per cent of the wood used was certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This label confirms that the wood originated from forests that are responsibly managed and helps to preserve forest ecosystems.
Windows
The high performance windows that surround the building reduce energy usage, minimizing heat loss from within the building during the winter and increasing heat absorption from the sun during the summer. By allowing daylight within the building, it reduces the energy usage of the building’s lighting through the use of daylight sensors while still maintaining a well-lit environment.
Furniture
The furniture throughout the building was carefully chosen to support the space’s various occupants and events. To ensure occupant health, only low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) furniture was used within the building. Providing mobile furniture was also a major consideration for the project. This allows for flexibility in the space to accommodate different types of events.
