This five-year program, which is administered by the Faculty of Arts, leads to a Bachelor of Education (Master of Teaching Program) from the Faculty of Education and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the Faculty of Arts.  A minimum of 25 full-course equivalents must be successfully completed.

Present certification requirements of the Province of Alberta can be satisfied.  When planning courses, students should take into consideration Alberta Teacher Certification Requirements. For details, refer to the Faculty of Education website.
 
The BMus (Music Education) part of the program involves three years of study and exists only in combination with the two-year BEd (Master of Teaching) program. It is designed for students intending to teach music (both instrumental and choral) in the schools. In addition to the core areas of performance, theory, history and musicianship, the program provides course work in conducting, vocal and instrumental techniques and appropriate pedagogy for different age groups.

Students initially enter the Bachelor of Music program in the Faculty of Arts and, therefore, must meet the both the admissions requirements for the Bachelor of Music program (see the Overview of Programs and Procedures) and the Faculty of Arts (see A.2 “Admission Requirements” at the University of Calgary). An audition is required, as well as evidence of successful completion of Grade III Royal Conservatory Theory/Harmony or the departmental music theory diagnostic exam.

To apply for the combined program, students must first complete a minimum of five full-course equivalents. The number of students admitted into this combined program each year is limited.  Applicants should refer to A.2 "Admission Requirements" in the Undergraduate Admissions section of this Calendar for information regarding admission to the Faculty of Education.

After successful completion of all fifteen full-course equivalents specified in the Music Education component of the combined degree program, students will complete the two-year BEd (Master of Teaching Program).

Combined degree students must inform the Faculty of Education of their intention to register by March 15 preceding the Fall Session in which they intend to begin the education portion of their programs. Registration in the Faculty of Education must occur within three years of being admitted into the combined degree program.

Students choosing to leave the combined degree program before completion of both degrees would be considered to have left the Faculty of Education and would revert to enrolment in the Faculty of Arts with all the degree requirements of that program.

A.FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS FOR COMBINED DEGREES

Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.

B. MAJOR-FIELD REQUIREMENTS FOR MUSIC EDUCATION AND NORMAL SEQUENCE

Students must successfully complete the following program of study, which includes either: (a) 12.5 to 14.0 full-course equivalents in the Field of Music in the Elementary teaching stream, or (b) 13.5 to 14.5 full-course equivalents in the Field of Music in the Secondary teaching stream.

First Year: Common Program for all BMus Majors

• Music Theory and Composition 201, 203 and 221.
• Music History and Literature 201 and 203.
• Music Performance 291, 293, and one of 201, 203, 205, 211, 213 or 215.
• 0.5 full-course equivalents in non-Music options.
• 0.5 full-course equivalents in open options.
• Pass piano proficiency examination or successfully complete Music Performance 271.
• One of Music Performance 101, 102, 103 or 104.

Second Year

• Music Theory and Composition 301, 303, 321.
• Music History and Literature 301, and 303.
• Music Performance 391, 393, and one of 301, 303, 305, 311, 313 or 315.
• Music Education 331 and 333.
• One of Music Performance 101, 102, 103, or 104.

Third Year — Elementary

• Music Education 413, 415, 401 and 403.
• Music Performance 491, 493, and one of 301, 303, 305, 311, 313 or 315.
• 0.5 full-course equivalents of non-Music options.
• 1.0 full-course equivalents of open options.
• One of Music Performance 101, 102, 103 or 104.

Third Year — Secondary

• Music Education 405, 407, 409, 411, and two of the following: Music Education 391, 393, 397.
• Music Performance 491 and 493.
• One of Music Performance 301, 303, 305, 311, 313 or 315.
• 0.5 full-course equivalents of open options.
• One of Music Performance 101, 102, 103 or 104.

Fourth and Fifth Years

Students in this program must meet the requirements (10 full-course equivalents) for the two-year BEd (Master of Teaching Program) degree. Details of the two-year BEd (Master of Teaching Program) may be found in the Faculty of Education section of this Calendar.

Note: Music Education Students are encouraged to include Music Education 417 as one of their option courses
