This Major is for students with a particular interest in music composition.

A. FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS

Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.

B. MAJOR-FIELD REQUIREMENTS AND NORMAL SEQUENCE

The BMus in Composition requires the successful completion of the following program of study, which includes 14.5 to 16.5 full-course equivalents in the Field of Music:

First Year: Common Program for all BMus Majors

• Music Theory and Composition 201, 203 and 221.
• Music History and Literature 201 and 203.
• Music Performance 291, 293, and one of 201, 203, 205, 211, 213 or 215.
• 0.5 full-course equivalents in non-Music options.
• 0.5 full-course equivalents in open options.
• Pass piano proficiency examination or successfully complete Music Performance 271.
• One of Music Performance 101, 102, 103 or 104.

Second Year

• Music History and Literature 301 and 303.
• Music Performance 391 and 393.
• Music Theory and Composition 301, 303, 321, 391 and 393.
• One of Music Performance 301, 303, 305, 311, 313 or 315.
• One of Music Performance 101, 102, 103 or 104.

Third Year

• 0.5 full-course equivalents in Music History and Literature at the 300 level or above.
• Music Theory and Composition 475, 477, 479, 491 and 493.
• Music Performance 327.
• 0.5 full-course equivalents in open options at the 300-level or above.
• 1.0 full-course equivalents in non-Music options.
• One of Music Performance 101, 102, 103 or 104.

Fourth Year

• Music Theory and Composition 577.
• One of Music Theory and Composition 471 or 473.
• Music Theory and Composition 598.
• One of Music Theory and Composition 481 or 575.
• 0.5 full-course equivalents in Music or non-Music options.
• 2.0 full-course equivalents in non-Music options.
• One of Music Performance 101, 102, 103 or 104.
