• A Minor is offered in Archaeology.
• A Concentration in Physical Anthropology can be taken in conjunction with all Archaeology degrees.
  

The Department of Archaeology offers instruction in Archaeology, Physical Anthropology and Ethnology. Students wishing to emphasize the social sciences and humanities in their program should register for the BA degree; those who wish to emphasize the natural and biological sciences should register for the BSc degree.

It is recommended that all Archaeology Majors, especially Honours students, take the field school courses (Archaeology 306, Archaeology 506) or a departmentally approved field school. Students must obtain approval from the Faculty of Arts prior to attending a field school run by another university.

Prospective students wishing to enter the BA or BSc (Archaeology) Program must meet the criteria in the section of this Calendar on A.2 “Admission Requirements” at the University of Calgary.

The Archaeology Honours programs permits students to select one of three possible degree pathways: the Honours BA, the Honours BSc, and the Honours BA or BSc with a focus on Physical Anthropology.

The Faculty of Arts procedures for Admission to Honours established in section 3.4.3 Honours Degrees with a Major Field are applicable and provide the overall framework. The application deadline is May 1. 

Programs in Archaeology can only be taken in conjunction with programs in International Indigenous Studies with approval from the Faculty of Arts. Consent is required for Major-plus-Minor combinations, Double Majors, Combined Degrees and Second Baccalaureate Degrees.

Archaeology

The Field of Archaeology, which consists of all courses labeled Archaeology ARKY, is subdivided as follows:

Social-Sciences Emphasis (List A): Archaeology 205, 303, 305, 307, 325, 341, 343, 345, 347, 351, 353, 355, 357, 395, 399, 401, 409, 419, 421, 423, 427, 431, 433, 439, 441, 443, 451, 455, 501, 503, 505, 511, 531, 537, 553, 591, 593, 597, 598.

Natural-Sciences Emphasis (List B): Archaeology 201, 203, 306, 413, 415, 417, 437, 453, 471, 506, 507, 517, 533, 555, 589, 595, 596.

Note: Archaeology 599 may be used in List A or List B, depending on the topic.

Archaeology and Physical Anthropology

The larger Field of Archaeology and Physical Anthropology includes all courses labeled Archaeology ARKY and the following additional courses with a Natural-Science Emphasis: Anthropology 311, 413 and 552.

Notes:

• Archaeology-related courses offered by other departments may, with the permission of the Archaeology Department, be accepted for credit towards the Major in an Archaeology program. In some instances the Department will permit credit by special assessment.
• For students in BSc programs in Archaeology, science courses outside the major, for example, from the Faculty of Science, may be used to supplement archaeology courses in List B; please consult with the Undergraduate Advisor for guidance on this issue.
