Biography

As a computational scientist working with Dr. Marc Strous in Energy Bioengineering Group. Xiaoli Dong's  main role is to lead and support EBG group's  computational activities: 1) development and implementation of computational pipelines for genomics, metagenomic, trancriptomics, metatranscriptomic, proteomics, and metaproteomic data analysis; 2) administration of EBG's computational servers, clusters, big data, scripts and programs; 3) mentoring students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers running their own data analysis pipelines; 4) independent monitoring of the scientific literature for new developments and adoption, implementation, and extension of such developments; 5) providing advice and leadership to other U of C investigators on computation, data administration and related practices; 6) lead EBG's annual international metagenomics workshops; 7) work with co-workers to implement the new  sequencing technology in EBG group.

Before Xiaoli moved to EBG in July  2014, she was worked as a bioinformatics support specialist in the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta to provide bioinformatics supports to several large scale projects, which involved multiple groups  from multiple universities and institutions. Xiaoli's roles in those projects were: genome, metagenome, EST sequence analysis, gene predication, genome annotation, 16s rRNA pyrotag analysis, bioinformatics software and database application development, and customization. During the work, Xiaoli needs to use Java, perl, C/C++, html, python, and Linux shell script from time to time. Xiaoli has gained intensive hand-on experience in installing all kinds of software on Linux operating system, setting up and maintaining all kinds of database and web servers. The large scale projects Xiaoli has been involved are listed below:

  • GENICE: Microbial Genomics for Oil Spill Preparedness in Canada’s Arctic Marine Environment
  • Managing Microbial Corrosion in Canadian Offshore and Onshore Oil Production
  • Metagenomics for Greener Production and Extraction of Hydrocarbon Energy
  • DOTM: Design oilseeds for tomorrow markets
  • CAVEman: 4D Mapping of Genomic and Medical Information
  • The Transplant Transcriptome Project
  • An Integrated And Distributed Bioinformatics Platform For Genome Canada
