University of Calgary’s operational roadmap to a carbon neutral campus by 2050.
Our Renewed Targets
Our 2019 CAP confirms renewed targets for Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and strategies to reduce GHG emissions from our campus operations.
Our Emissions Reductions: 2008 – 2018
Our 2010 CAP included ambitious goals to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions. In 2018, outcomes included an approximate 30% reduction in total emissions despite substantial growth in both buildings and campus populations. On a gross square meter basis, GHG emissions are down approximately 40%.
Three key initiatives enabled this success:
Our Renewed Approach
Our 2019 CAP outlines actions to realize emissions reductions through four key focus areas to drive cleaner energy supply and energy demand reduction. These priority areas require behaviour change from the community to engage building occupants and building operators in day-to-day actions to reduce energy use.
- New building innovation - Development of ultra-energy efficient and net-zero carbon construction.
- Existing building energy retrofits - Reduce energy demand through energy retrofits in new and existing buildings.
- Green power - Use higher amounts of clean power and incorporate renewable and low-carbon energy supplies.
- Decarbonization of the district energy system - Transform district energy system on campus into a low-temperature, low carbon system.
