A partnership program involving the CUC and AIT, Bangkok
The CUC UEM Project at AIT
In the wake of unprecedented urban growth in Asian cities, Urban Environmental
Management (UEM) is emerging as a key strategy to improving urban environmental quality.
In order to achieve this objective, effective environmental managers are required.
Responding to this need, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), through its
executing agency the Canadian Universities Consortium (CUC), has collaborated with the
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in Bangkok in the design and development of the
CUC UEM Project at AIT . This consortium is comprised of the Universities of British
Columbia, Calgary, Montreal, Waterloo and York.
Programs
The CUC UEM Project at AIT aims to support AIT and other international agencies in
developing the urban environmental management skills and knowledge of practitioners,
academics and researchers. The Project is comprised of three core programs:
- the UEM Graduate Studies Program at AIT (Master's and PhD degrees);
- the UEM Outreach, Research and Development Program; and
- the CUC UEM at AIT Training and Technology Transfer Program (TTTP).
The Project thus helps AIT to provide a unique blend of programs and focus areas that
facilitate various theoretical and practical pursuits. Ranging from the preservation of
cultural heritage to identifying effective alternatives in urban infrastructure financing,
such pursuits contribute to a dynamic UEM approach that will help lead Asian cities
towards a bright and sustainable future.
CIDA Support
Throughout the current phase of the Project's duration (1996 2001), the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) will contribute CAD$ 5.5 million towards the
delivery of the three core programs. This funding supports various initiatives, including:
- long- and short-term faculty secondments from Canada;
- financial support (2 terms) for students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Papua
New Guinea, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam; and
- training and technology transfer activities.
Partners
In addition to CIDA funding, the UEM Graduate Program is supported by the following
agencies:
- Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)
- Regional Urban Development Office (RUDO) of USAID
- British Commonwealth Secretariat
- Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA)
- Government of Papua New Guinea
- Government of Japan
- Royal Thai Government
