CUC UEM: Why UEM?
Urban Environmental Management (UEM) is emerging as a key strategy to improving
environmental quality in urban areas. According to the World Bank, 2.5 billion people will
be living in Asian cities by the year 2020. This unprecedented urban growth is certain to
create many serious environmental, social, political, economic, and cultural problems
around the world.
Solutions to such large-scale problems, however, will not be simple. In fact a
multitude of inter-connected and integrated approaches will be required to facilitate
progress in urban centres. Most significantly, the skills and abilities necessary to
manage the processes of change will be critical to improving the communities of the 21st
century. The CUC UEM Project aims to develop these crucial skills and faculties, in order
to help make positive and beneficial urban environmental change happen.
