CUC Universities

The University of British Columbia (UBC)

UBC is one of Canada's largest universities and has strong interests and many diverse activities focused on Asia. Members of four faculties (Applied Science, Graduate Studies, Forestry and Science) have participated in the first and second phases of the CUC UEM Project at AIT  (the CUC–AIT.PP, 1988 – 1995, and the CUC UEM Program at AIT  and TTTP, 1996 – 2001), in addition to several practitioners from the Vancouver region. UBC has great strengths in collaborative research and creative professional practice – strengths which are well suited to addressing environmental problems in the rapidly growing urban areas of South and Southeast Asia.

The University of Calgary (U of C)

The Faculty of Environmental Design at the U of C has strongly supported the first two phases of the Project by seconding faculty, sending graduate students to AIT, and supplying administrative support through the Calgary Secretariat. The Faculty is a professional graduate faculty that includes program streams in Architecture, Planning, Industrial Design and Environmental Science – all of which stress interdisciplinary approaches.

The Faculty of Environmental Design has over 25 years of experience in interdisciplinary professional education and practice. This experience has allowed the faculty and its students to gain considerable international exposure in many areas of environmental practice, including major projects in Peru, Ecuador and China. Many faculty members have worked in Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, the Middle East and the former Eastern Europe, and many are now involved in environmental planning and management.

L'Universite de Montreal (UM)

The University of Montreal, with over 45,000 students, is the largest French-speaking university in North America. With its two affiliated schools, Management and Engineering, UM covers the entire spectrum of urban environmental management studies. Particularly strong are urban transportation system management, environmental and urban health management, and urban environmental planning and management. Urban environmental concerns are present in almost every program. The UM's School of Urban Planning has a strong area of specialization in UEM, developed in cooperation with architects, landscape architects, urban geographers and civil engineers.

The University of Montreal maintains a worldwide presence, and during the 1970's and 80's it built strong networks in Africa, South America and the Caribbean countries It is currently maintaining a strong presence in Asia (especially China, Vietnam and Laos). The UM brings strong Euro-American ties to the CUC with established ties in the private and municipal sectors. It can offer a broad range of expertise, including "Montreal International," of which it is a leading partner, to the CUC and to students and scholars at AIT and from around Asia.

The University of Waterloo

The Faculty of Environmental Studies at the University of Waterloo comprises two academic units and two professional schools, which embrace a mixture of professional, academic and interdisciplinary programs. It brings together the related disciplines of architecture, environment and resource studies, geography and planning, and focuses them on the inter-relationships of the human and ecological attributes of the environment, with links to design, management, planning and policy considerations.

The research centres, outside the Faculty, whose applied mandates are particularly relevant to the mission of AIT and the UEM Program are the Institute for Risk Research, the Institute for Groundwater Research, and the Transport Engineering Group. The Faculty of Environmental Studies also has extensive connections with Asia – principally through CIDA projects in Indonesia, China, and India.

York University

York is recognized for its strong emphasis in interdisciplinary Social Science-based programs. Many of York's programs and centres have extensive international development experience, including work with institutions and organizations in Asia. The units which have been most active in Asia include the Joint Centre for Asia and the Pacific, the Faculty of Administrative Studies, and the Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES).

The FES has been involved in an array of funded international development projects over the past 20-odd years, either as the lead agency or as a partner in a consortium arrangement. The FES is currently involved with projects in East Africa, the Caribbean, Indonesia and Thailand.
