CIDA's Involvement
For the past 25 years, CIDA has been working cooperatively with AIT in Bangkok,
Thailand. In 1988, the Canadian Universities Consortium Asian Institute of
Technology Partnership Program (CUCAIT. PP) was formed to address regional human
resource needs through education and demonstration activities in the interdisciplinary
fields of Human Settlements Development and Natural Resource Planning and Management. Out
of these activities, the CUC team with AIT colleagues designed the UEM Graduate Program at
AIT. In 1995 CIDA funded a further phase of work with continued support for the academic
program while adding an outreach component to forge linkages with the Canadian private
sector and other organizations doing related work in the field. This initiative then
evolved into the CUC UEM TTTP at AIT
(Training and Technology
Transfer Program). CIDA provides several long- and short-term faculty secondments and
financial support for qualified Master's and Doctoral students enrolled in the UEM
Program. Funding for Master's students is in the form of two terms of research
assistantship, which covers fees, living expenses and a research grant.
The CUC UEM Project at AIT complements Canada's Official Development Assistance and
CIDA's Programming Priorities and Policies on the Environment. The Project addresses Asia
Branch objectives, particularly with regard to the environment, private sector development
and gender equity. It is also very supportive of Canada's environmental strategy and is
consistent with the objectives contained in AIT's Mission Statement and Strategic Plan for
1996 2001.
CIDA's Program Priority Areas are as follows:
- Basic Human Needs
- Women in Development
- Infrastructure Services / Capacity Building
- Human Rights, Democracy and Good Governance
- Private Sector Development
- Environment
- Youth
