Pass and cut
Category: Agility
Level: 3
1-2 minutes in each direction
Carla van den Berg
- This drill requires 4 cones and 2 balls
- Place four cones to create a square formation, with players evenly distributed in four lines; one behind each cone
- The first player in two of the lines starts with the ball
- Lines starting with the ball must be beside one another
- Coach designates a direction for the drill (right or left)
- Players with the ball dribble into the centre of the square.
- When a player with the ball reaches the centre, they pass to the first person in the line who is immediately diagonal to their starting line (i.e. should be directly across from them in the direction they were dribbling)
- Immediately after passing the ball, the player performs a sharp cut and accelerates in the designated direction
- The player joins the end of their new line
- Mixing up passing and running order
- Cue "Pass straight, cut right/left"
- Passive change of directions after passing
- Cue "Pass then accelerate"
- Knee caving in during plant and cut movement
- Cue "Push knee out towards pinky toe"
- Only cutting in one direction throughout the drill
- Coach must remember to change the direction of the cut mid-way through
- Chaos in the centre box challenges spatial awareness with a ball
- Incorporates acceleration and change of direction movements
- Cognitively challenging
- Sport-specific drill prepares players for the session
- Higher-intensity drill to increase heart and breathing rates prior to the beginning of the practice/game
