Embedding research in all we do enhances our ability to change the world. We will develop our research and innovation ecosystem and grow external research revenue. We will expand transdisciplinary scholarship, partner with community on grand challenges. We will create research opportunities for undergraduate students.

Ahead of Tomorrow 2023-2030 strategic plan

Our Vice-President Research (VPR), Dr. William Ghali, is nearing the end of his 5-year term. He has expressed interest in serving another term.

Consistent with our standard practice, an Advisory Review Committee has been struck to make a recommendation to the President on Dr. Ghali’s reappointment. Membership of the committee includes representation from across the University of Calgary community – a full list of members can be accessed here.

The committee is seeking input from our community to inform their recommendation to the President on Dr. William Ghali’s reappointment. Please take 10-15 minutes to thoughtfully respond to the questions below by January 20, 2025.

In doing so, we would encourage you to reflect on a) the performance of Dr. William Ghali and the outcomes he has achieved within his portfolio over the last 5 years, b) the efficiency and effectiveness of his portfolio, c) his own personal leadership style and communication skills, and d) the culture he has fostered within his portfolio over the last 5 years. Specific examples are encouraged.

1) Please share your affiliation with the University of Calgary, and briefly summarize your level of interaction with Dr. Ghali over the last 5 years.

2) What do you believe has gone well within the VPR portfolio under Dr. Ghali’s tenure as VPR?

3) Where do you believe there has been room for improvement within the VPR portfolio under Dr. Ghali’s tenure as VPR?

4) What would you like the review committee to know in making a recommendation about the reappointment of Dr. Ghali as VPR for another 5-year term?

5) If re-appointed, what would your advice to Dr. Ghali be as he embarks on a second 5-year term?
