Karen Jackson joined the University of Calgary as general counsel in October 2012.
Karen leads University Legal Services and serves as an integral member of the executive leadership team reporting to the President. To this role, she brings outstanding credentials and a wide breadth of client-oriented experience in both in-house and private legal practices.
Prior to this appointment, Karen was with Stikeman Elliott LLP, one of Canada’s pre-eminent law firms, where she was a member of the Corporate Group, serving as an associate (1994-1998) and then a partner (1998-2012). Prior to joining Stikeman Elliott, Karen was based in Calgary for 10 years with TrizecHahn Corporation (formerly Trizec Corporation) serving as senior vice-president, general counsel and corporate secretary.
As a strong advocate for professional development and ongoing education, Karen has mentored associates, articling students and law clerks for the past 18 years. She is very involved in local and international community activities; among other voluntary positions, she has been a director and chair of the Governance and Nominations Committee for Plan International Canada, an international development agency focused on improving the lives of children and families in developing countries. In her role, she has served as a delegate to the Members’ Assembly, where she represented Canada as one of 20 national organizations which comprise Plan International.
Karen is a senior corporate lawyer well-recognized for her clarity in perspective, delivery of practical solutions to complex issues, and optimizing the effectiveness of the general counsel function. She is a strong team builder with skills in corporate finance, joint ventures, privacy and special projects involving multiple stakeholders.
