Catalyzing Research & Intercultural Practices with Newcomers
In a world currently witnessing unprecedented movement of people, goods and ideas across geopolitical, cultural and linguistic borders, the successful integration of newcomers across societies is an issue of global importance.
The Newcomer Research Network advances and advocates for research that informs intercultural practices supporting newcomers, across the University of Calgary, the surrounding communities, nationally and internationally through interdisciplinary collaborative partnerships. Our approach enhances research efforts not only among network team members at UCalgary, but also through engagement with community partners including settlement and advocacy agencies.
Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC) provide a wide range of settlement services to the newcomers looking to begin a new chapter of their lives in Canada. ISC offer a client-focused, integrated approach when working with individuals and their families to help them settle in Calgary.
The aim of ISC is to reach newcomers in a timely and responsive manner to facilitate a smooth transition, proper settlement and successful integration into the Calgary community. ISC envision immigrants and refugees achieve successful economic, social and cultural integration and become valued contributors to Canadian society.
Immigrant Services Calgary believe in three research strategies - innovation, impact, and inspiration. Research is an important part of helping newcomers become valued contributors to society. ISC accept research partners from across Canada who are interested in helping immigrants and refugees achieve successful economic, social and cultural integration through research projects like the ones described.
Calgary Local Immigration Partnership (CLIP) works across sectors, organizations, and service systems to improve local capacity to welcome and support newcomers. CLIP has identified strategic priorities to help newcomers adjust to life in Calgary. The CLIP community partnership:
- Includes newcomer needs in community planning processes,
- Applies action plans to improve newcomer outcomes, and
- Supports sectors to communicate with each other, share information, identify service gaps, and align their services.
CLIP also conduct local research. Recent notable research by CLIP include a Survey of Newcomers and a Survey of Service Providers, a Profile of Immigrant Health in Calgary, completed with a university researcher, and Calgary Immigration Data. CLIP Council and working group members use the research findings to adjust their Action Plan going forward.
The Alberta Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies (AAISA) is a non-profit umbrella organization representing agencies that provide resettlement, settlement, and integration services to newcomers in the province of Alberta. AAISA works to build the sector’s capacity to better serve newcomers by fostering collaboration, professionalization, and member-driven research and policy work. AAISA envision an inclusive, welcoming, and engaged society made possible by facilitating collaboration and leadership within the settlement serving sector.
AIMGA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the successful integration of International Medical Graduates (IMGs). AIMGA is highly responsive to the needs of their members, they work together with their members having a professional and friendly attitude, and they deliver quality and useful programs for them. They also deliver multi-lingual useful health and wellness programs and information with the contribution from there highly skilled and knowledgeable members from diverse socio-cultural background, which helps reach the health and wellness message to the diverse and hard-to-reach immigrant communities. Essentially, we keep our members’ best interests at the heart of what we do. Improve healthcare through the re-engagement of IMGs in Canada and support IMGs as they complete the professional requirements in order to integrate into the Canadian healthcare system.
The Calgary’s Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY) supports immigrant and refugee youth and their families with knowledge and information about Canadian culture and schooling system. Our experienced staff and program facilitators help children and youth make lasting friendships through programs that grow their personal, social and emotional skills while helping them settle into life in Canada.
As a newcomer family looking to register your child(ren) in school, we are your first point of contact. We have offices in the public Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District reception centres. This allows us to provide one-on-one support to your family and to direct your children into programs that best suit their needs.
ActionDignity, previously known as the Ethno-Cultural Council of Calgary, launched on March 21, 2002 with nine ethno-cultural organizations and individuals. It registered as an Alberta Society on December 16, 2002 and as a Charitable Organization on October 15, 2012. The organization has championed initiatives to address diversity, human rights, racial inequities, and public participation, while building leadership and organizational capacity within Calgary's ethno-cultural communities. Additionally, it developed innovative approaches to strengthen the role of these communities in service design, access, delivery, domestic violence prevention, and neighborhood strengthening. ActionDignity also conducted important research on the impact of changes to public policies, especially on immigration.
The Alberta Network of Immigrant Women (ANIW) is a non-profit organization based in Alberta, Canada, that is committed to empowering immigrant women to become active and engaged members of their communities. ANIW offers a variety of programs and services designed to help immigrant women overcome barriers, build new skills, and access resources to support their integration into Canadian society. These include health and wellness, employment services, and leadership programs, as well as workshops and events that promote cross-cultural understanding and inclusion. ANIW recognizes the unique challenges that immigrant women face and is dedicated to promoting equality, justice, and learning for all members of the community. The organization values collaboration, education, integrity, and accountability as essential elements for achieving its mission. ANIW is an important resource for immigrant women in Alberta who are seeking support and guidance as they build new lives in Canada.
The Foundation for the Voice of Immigrants in Canada for Empowerment is a non-profit organization based in Calgary, Alberta, that aims to empower immigrants and refugees in Canada. The foundation provides a platform for immigrants to share their experiences and connect with other members of the community. It also offers programs and services that promote integration and civic engagement, such as language classes, mentorship, and advocacy. By fostering a sense of community among immigrants, the foundation seeks to empower them to become leaders and agents of change in their new home. Ultimately, the Foundation for the Voice of Immigrants in Canada for Empowerment strives to create a more inclusive and welcoming society for all newcomers to Canada.
The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) is a non-profit organization based in Calgary, Alberta, that provides services and programs to help immigrants and refugees integrate into Canadian society. TIES offers language training, employment services, settlement support, and educational programs to help newcomers build their skills and confidence. They also provide community outreach programs and workshops that promote cross-cultural understanding and inclusion.
