DR. MAHDIS BISHEBAN

Principal Investigator

Dr. Mahdis Bisheban has held the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary since July 2021. Additionally, she takes on the role of directing the Intelligent and Dynamics Control Lab at the same institution. 

In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dr. Bisheban is an active Technical Committee Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Vertical and Short Takeoff and Landing Aircraft Systems (V/STOL) group. She also contributes to the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) as a member of the Mechatronics, Robotics, and Controls committee. She extends her involvement to professional associations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), particularly IEEE Women in Engineering, IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society, and IEEE Control Systems Society.

Before her current roles, she gained experience as a Research Associate at the Aerospace Research Center, National Research Council Canada (NRC), and as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Queen's University. Yu-Hao (Leo) Tsai

Yu-Hao (Leo) Tsai

Yu-Hao work as a full-time MSc graduate student in IDCL. His research interest are in the area of machine learning and Deep Reinforcement Learning of all kinds of robotic applications. Prior to this, he received his Bachelor's degree in National Taiwan Normal University with a double major of Mechatronic Engineering and Computer Science. Currently, his work is mainly related to the control and path-planning of multi-rotors UAV under wind disturbance.

Hiranya Udagedara

Hiranya Udagedara is an MSc student currently conducting her research under the supervision of Dr. Mahdis Bisheban. She holds a B.Sc. in Engineering from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. Her research primarily focuses on real-time wind estimation using airborne bicopters. Through her work, she aims to contribute to advancements in unmanned aerial systems and their applications, particularly in areas like environmental monitoring and autonomous navigation.

Andres Gonzalez

Andrés is from Colombia and is pursuing a master’s in mathematics at the University of Calgary. Currently, he’s working on an exciting industrial project in collaboration with an aerospace company in Ontario, applying mathematics to solve real-world challenges. He enjoys meeting new people, exploring different cultures, and hobbies like soccer, chess, dancing, and playing the guitar.

Chanhong Park

Chanhong is currently engaged in research that focuses on the development of control laws for unmanned aerial manipulators (UAM). His specific area of investigation involves addressing the intricate challenges associated with managing changing inertia parameters and coupled dynamics during manipulation motions. In his leisure time, Chanhong takes pleasure in activities like hiking, running, and playing tennis.

Shawn's primary focus revolves around studying the mechanics and control of an unmanned aerial manipulator (UAM). In his leisure time, he indulges in road trips, and he has recently taken up photography as a new hobby.

(2023-2024) The team designed an impressive Pick and Place Controller for the Kinova Gen 3 Robotic Arm, complete with an educational tutorial on kinematics and control—where science meets hands-on fun! From grasping objects with robotic precision to elegantly placing them, this project is all about bringing motion to life. Now, SSE takes the controller for a spin at various events, wowing audiences with the robotic arm's cool tricks. Who knew robots could steal the show?

Controller Optimization

(2023-2024) This project, defined by a Calgary-based company (CoolIT), challenged the team to tackle a real-world problem in liquid cooling technology. The students focused on system characterization and controller optimization for a temperature control valve and pumps, aiming to improve efficiency and performance. Their hard work and dedication paid off, earning them 2nd place at the UCalgary Engineering Design Fair 2024.

Wayfinder: A Differential Drive Autonomous Mapping Robot

Meet the incredible team behind our project - Charlie, Elizabeth, Lisa, Mohammed, and Zhanhao. This group of undergraduate students banded together to design and prototype a state-ofthe-art differential wheeled robot that can autonomously navigate and map out a maze. Thanks to their outstanding talent and tireless dedication, they took home 2nd place at the UCalgary Engineering Design Fair 2023. We couldn't be prouder of this brilliant squad and can't wait to see what they'll conquer next!
