Biography
Diana joined the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, at the University of Calgary as a Masters student in September 2018 working under the supervision of Dr. Jocelyn Poissant in the Department of Ecosystem and Public Health. Diana earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Animal Biology from the University of Guelph.
Prior to starting her MSc, Diana was working as an undergraduate research student over the summer of 2018, supervised by Drs. Jocelyn Poissant and John Gilleard. Her project was to find the optimal number of SNPs needed to estimate inbreeding and to develop a custom multiplex panel for Sable Island horses.
Diana’s current project is “Impact of Inbreeding Depression on Juvenile Survival Traits in Sable Island Horses.” She will be studying how parental inbreeding and relatedness as well as individual inbreeding levels affect the foaling rate, birth date, and survival of the foals in the population.
Diana is also currently the Graduate Student Representative for the Wildlife Health and Ecology Research Group at the University of Calgary, where she schedules all the meetings, organize talks, and runs the twitter page. She is also a member of the Wildlife Disease Association (Student Chapter) at the University of Calgary, where they have monthly journal-club type meetings.
