Biography

Danielle is a Masters student working under Dr. Patrick Hanington in Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta. She received her Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Biological Sciences with a Sociology minor from the University of Alberta in 2017. It was during her undergrad that she became interested in parasitology, zoonotic disease and the concept of One Health.

She is currently working on a project called “Rapid DNA Based Detection of Whirling Disease Causing Parasites from Environmental Samples.” Her project aims to develop a qPCR based detection test to identify the presence of whirling disease parasites quicker and easier in a waterbody. This would allow for broad scale monitoring of this invasive parasite throughout Alberta.
