Anthropologists ask questions such as: Do non-human primates deceive each other? Why do many primates live in groups? How does grooming strengthen social bonds?
This degree in biological anthropology investigates the origins and evolution of our species, as well as modern human diversity, adaptation to different environments, and the behaviour and ecology of other primate species to understand what we are as a species and how we came to be here.
In this program, you'll examine human origins by providing hands-on laboratory experiences, including analyzing fossils, skeletal and genetic analysis, and primate behaviour observation. Fieldwork is an important part of your experience, and this degree offers opportunities to spend time in the field locally and internationally. With this degree, you gain knowledge of human anatomy, laboratory research skills, and critical thinking and analytical skills.
Cultural resource management companies often recruit students in anthropology for summer positions. Employers affiliated with the CO-OP program also value the experience of our undergraduates.
Take your learning off campus by exploring one of our 200+ international opportunities. For example, in Anthropology you can participate in the Primatology Program in Panama. We encourage you to check out UCalgary’s selection of programs.
With knowledge of osteology, anatomy, and primate behaviour, and with laboratory research skills, you can find careers in forensic anthropology identifying human remains, and as researchers involved with data collection, analysis, and laboratory work. Many conservation organizations or government agencies, focusing on wildlife conservation, habitat preservation, or environmental education employ our grads too.
A degree in Anthropology can also be used as a stepping-stone to graduate studies or another professional degree such as law, medicine, veterinary medicine, or education.
Examples include Evolution of Human Behaviour, Primate Ecology and Conservation, and Nutritional Anthropology.
Find your People! The Kula Ring is the undergraduate society for anthropology students representing socio cultural, biological, and primatology students. The club connects students and faculty through various events, which are great places to meet new people and network with professionals.
This program has let me explore in a fun, interesting, and inspiring way — including at a primatology field school in Belize. Professors are passionate about their work and dedicated to student success.
