Diverse and Inclusive Teams Outperform Homogeneous Teams

Myth: Teams that think alike are more cohesive and effective.

Reality: Research consistently shows that diverse teams perform better than homogeneous teams. There is an extensive body of research on the benefits of diverse and inclusive teams, and the downside of homogeneous teams – including people who think alike are inclined to groupthink and conformity. 

Diverse teams may feel less comfortable but, if managed well, are smarter, make better decisions, improve performance, generate more longer-term success, and outperform homogeneous teams. There is an extensive body of research on the benefits of diverse and inclusive teams, and the downside of homogeneous teams – including of smart people who think alike are inclined to groupthink and conformity. This research is highly relevant to university departmental, faculty and senior leadership teams, teams in often overlooked administrative offices, and especially teams across the research ecosystem.
