EDIA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) Award for Academic Staff

The EDIA Award for Academic Staff honours professors. lecturers and academic staff who have made meaningful contributions to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within their academic environments. Nominees must be current, full-time professors, lecturers or academic staff members at the University of Calgary. Nominations should provide evidence of the nominee’s commitment to EDIA activities over at least six months prior to nomination.

Criteria for the EDIA Award for Academic Staff may include:

  1. Impact on Diversity: Demonstrated efforts to enhance diversity among students, faculty, and staff within their department or faculty.
  2. Inclusive Teaching Practices: Adoption of teaching methods that accommodate diverse learning styles and backgrounds, fostering an inclusive classroom environment.
  3. Mentorship and Support: Active mentorship of individuals from underrepresented groups, providing guidance and support to advance their academic and professional growth.
  4. Community Engagement: Initiatives that connect academic staff with the university community, promoting inclusivity and diversity beyond their immediate role.
  5. Research Contributions: Research that addresses equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility or that fosters a deeper understanding of these topics.
  6. Leadership and Advocacy: Leadership roles in committees or initiatives focused on EDIA, including advocacy for policy changes that enhance diversity and inclusion.
  7. Collaboration: Cross-disciplinary collaboration with colleagues to promote EDIA initiatives within the university.
  8. Evidence of Outcomes: Clear, measurable outcomes or evidence of initiatives that have positively impacted EDIA within the faculty or institution.

Nomination Process

  1. Submission of Nomination Form: A comprehensive nomination form specific to each award category must be submitted, detailing the nominee’s contributions to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA).
  2. Evidence of Impact: Include clear, specific examples that demonstrate the nominee's achievements, highlighting both current and potential future impact on EDIA.
  3. Supporting Documentation: Additional materials are encouraged, such as work samples, letters of support from faculty or community members, and an optional personal statement from the nominee that outlines their EDIA contributions.
  4. Eligibility for Nomination: Nominations are welcome from faculty, students, staff, and peers.
  5. Relevant Documentation: When applicable, provide documentation of relevant activities or projects that further illustrate the nominee’s contributions.

Evaluation

The EDIA Awards Adjudication Committee will evaluate nominations using a detailed rubric based on the award criteria, assessing both qualitative and quantitative impacts of the nominee’s work.
