Patient-Reported Outcome Measures

PROMs are standardized, validated surveys that measure a patient's health status or health-related quality of life at a single point in time.

These are some of the instruments that the PCML team has helped to develop.

Epilepsy Surgery Satisfaction Questionnaire (ESSQ-19)

There is a need for valid instruments to assess satisfaction with surgical interventions in epilepsy patients. Using psychometric methodology and data collected in multiple tertiary epilepsy centers, we derived and validated a 19-item self-administered questionnaire, the ESSQ-19 which consists of  four domains: seizure control, psychosocial functioning, surgical complications, recovery from surgery, and one global satisfaction item. The new, valid and reliable ESSQ-19 can be used in clinical and research settings. Further evaluation of the ESSQ-19 is required across different languages, and to measure clinical change over time. The development of this measure was led by Dr Samuel Wiebe (President, ILEA).sRMDA provided statistical support and led the psychometric evaluation of the ESSQ.

Seattle Angina Questionnaire - Canadian Version (SAQ-CAN)

The Seattle Angina Questionnaire is a widely used 19-item patient-reported outcomes measure used to assess physical health status in individuals with coronary heart disease.  Originally, developed in a predominantly male population of US veterans, the SAQ has been validated in several other populations but not in Canadian Sample. The SAQ-CAN is a valid 16-item instrument developed and validated in the Canadian population.

Global Assessment of Migraine Severity (GAMS)

Migraine severity is an important clinical endpoint in several clinical and epidemiological studies then assessing treatment efficacy in the management of migraine. The limitations of longer severity measures are addressed in a brief single item patient-reported measure, the Global Assessment of Migraine Severity (GAMS), developed to assess patients’ perception of their disease severity.

Global Assessment of Epilepsy-Related Disability (GAERDs)

The GAERD Scale was developed as a similar single-item 7-point Likert scale to evaluate the disability due to seizures in adult patients with epilepsy

Global Assessment of Severity in Epilepsy (GASE)

The Global Assessment of Severity of Epilepsy (GASE) Scale is a single-item, 7-point global rating scale designed for neurologist-report of overall severity of epilepsy in children.
