Final Examinations Assessed in an Online Format

In addition to the G.5 Scheduling of Final Examinations regulations, the following regulations apply to timed final examinations for online delivery.

  • Timed final exams must be designed to be completed within time scheduled for the final examination stated in the final examination schedule provided by the registrar (e.g. a two-hour final exam is designed to take two hours to complete).
  • Timed final exams must be set up in D2L or other approved university platforms to allow for an additional 50 per cent time extension to complete the exam (e.g. a two-hour exam would have a three-hour time window to complete).
  • Any additional accommodation requirements through Student Accessibility Services still apply to online assessments. See item d., Section G. Examination and Tests for additional details. Any time allocated for issues that arise during an assessment would be in addition to accommodation requirements.
  • Online exams must be made available for students to complete starting 24 hours ahead of the scheduled final exam time as indicated in the student centre.
  • The Dean of the faculty offering the course must approve a synchronous online final assessment where students start and end at the same time.
  • The Faculty must provide alternative arrangements for students who are not able to complete the assessment during the synchronous scheduled time (e.g. different time zone, caregiving responsibilities, ability to secure an appropriate test-taking environment).
  • The process for requesting an online final assessment at an alternate time must be articulated in the course outline.
  • All final exams must be submitted by the end time as indicated in the Student and Faculty center.
  • Technology requirements needed for the final examination must be indicated in the course outline.

Off-Site Examinations

When the final examination is scheduled on the Calgary campus, students may be provided with the opportunity to write the final examination at an approved invigilation centre if their current residence is more than 100 kilometres from the Calgary campus. A list of approved invigilation centres is available at ucalgary.ca/registrar/exams/preparing-final-exams. Students must inform the course instructor by the following dates if they wish to write a final examination off-site:

Fall November 1
Winter March 1
Spring June 1
Summer August 1

Students registered in an onsite course are expected to write the final examination at the location indicated in the Final Examination schedule. It is only under exceptional circumstances, and with the permission of the Associate Dean of the faculty offering the course, that a student will be permitted to write the examination off-site. The Associate Dean may require documentation to support the request. Examinations may be written at an approved invigilation centre or be invigilated by an individual approved by the faculty.

Students will be responsible for any invigilation fees charged by external examination centres.
