Required Courses*

*Note:: Commencing Fall 2011, Biology 241/243 will replace Biology 231/233 as the core introductory departmental courses, serving as prerequisites for the 300-level core biology courses and others.

Biology 231 and 233 will no longer be offered effective Fall 2011.  To accommodate students with only one course completed when the transition occurs the Department will accept any pairing of the old courses (231/233) and the new courses (241/243) to satisfy the 1.0 FCE junior biology course requirement.

2.5 FCE - Biology 231, 233, 311, 313, 331 (Biocore)

1.0 FCE - Chemistry 201 or 211, and 203 or 213

1.0 FCE - One of Mathematics 249 or 251 or 281 and one of 211, or 213 or 253 or 283 (see Recommendations below)

1.0 FCE - Computer Science 217 and 219, or Computer Science 231 and 233, or 235 and Computer Science option

or

Geology 201 and 203

or

Physics 211 or 221, and 223 (see Recommendations below)

0.5 FCE - Biochemistry 393

1.0 FCE - Major options and/or options combination (see Second Year in the Program Sequence Table below)

1.0 FCE - Chemistry 351 and 353 (or Chemistry 351 and option, check details of programs below to see where this is allowed)

2.0 FCE - Breadth requirement: Options from outside the Faculty of Science.

Note: These 2.0 FCE form part of the 4.0 FCE options from outside the Faculty of Science. Of these 4.0 FCE students must select at least 1.0 FCE from the Faculty of Arts. (see 3.4.B.(d) Breadth requirement in Section 3 Faculty Regulations).

Recommendations
  • Biology 231, 233, 311, 313, 331 constitute the Biocore and must be taken in the sequence described below if students wish to pursue any of the degree programs offered by the Department of Biological Sciences.
  • Students planning a Biochemistry or Zoology major must take Physics 211 or 221, and 223.
  • Students planning an Ecology or Zoology major are advised to take a course in linear methods (i.e., Mathematics 211 or 213).
  • Prior to registering in the second year, students should consider which program they wish to pursue in the third and subsequent years so that an appropriate choice of major access courses may be made (see Second Year in the Program Sequence Table below).
  • Chemistry 355 is an acceptable substitute for Chemistry 353; it is recommended that students planning Biochemistry Honours complete Chemistry 355.
