Hydrogen and industrial chemicals from biomass

Funded by CFREF-Part of GRI

We seek to efficiently produce chemical feedstocks from biomass and/or bitumen fractions that support the energy transition to a carbon free energy system?

Can a hybrid technology platform be developed that produces both hydrogen and valuable chemicals from biomass using photocatalytic reforming of biomass for hydrogen production? Can we control and customize the production of complex collateral organic species (CCOS) in such a system, that are suitable as electrochemical electrolytes, interfacially active chemical species for EOR/CCS carbon storage activities or for carbon storage as AVECS (alternative vectors for carbon storage)?

We are examining routes to high quality carbon fibre from bitumen. This is a collaboration between Chemistry (Van Humbeek and Thangadurai groups), Chemical engineering (Hu and Kibria groups) and PRG.
