University has record year in sponsored research income
The University of Calgary is in seventh place in the list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities based on sponsored research income, according to the latest Re$earch Infosource Inc. results. The report was released on Oct. 26, 2017.
The university generated $360.5 million in sponsored research income for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, $2 million more than the previous year. The university continues to secure more sponsored income each year, but moved from sixth to seventh place in the rankings due to other universities also having successful years.
“We have had another record year in sponsored research funding due to the quality of research and the very talented researchers, graduate students and post-doctoral scholars we have on campus,” said Ed McCauley, vice-president (research) at the University of Calgary.” Our continued growth in research funding is a strong indication of meeting the goals of our Eyes High Strategy. ”
The University of Calgary also expects to perform strongly in the Re$earch Infosource rankings next year, as sponsored research income for 2017 is forecast at $380.4 million.
Using Statistics Canada data and its own Canadian University R&D Database, Re$earch Infosource ranks universities by their research income and research intensity. Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities ranks universities based on their total sponsored research income. The financial input measures are total sponsored research income and faculty research intensity. The research output and impact measures are total number of publications, publication intensity and publication impact.
University rankings provide valuable baseline information for the university. Re$earch Infosource’s ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities provides a snapshot of how the University of Calgary compares to other large research universities in Canada. The university uses Re$earch Infosource rankings as one means for measuring success, as well as evaluating other rankings systems that measure different criteria with different methodologies.
The top 10 universities for 2016, ranked in order, include the University of Toronto in top spot, followed by McGill University, University of British Columbia, University of Alberta, University of Montreal, Laval University, University of Calgary, McMaster University, University of Ottawa and the University of Western Ontario.
