Learn about the members of the Addictive Behaviours Lab

  1. Dr. David C. Hodgins

    David received his BA (Hons) from Carleton University and completed his MA and PhD in clinical psychology at Queen's University. Currently, he is a professor at the University of Calgary in the Department of Psychology, with an adjunct appointment with the Faculty of Medicine. He also has his own clinical private practice and is an Institute Node Coordinator for the University, through the Alberta Gambling Research Institute (AGRI). David's main interests and works lie in addictive behaviours, with a focus on alcohol and gambling addiction, and comorbid psychiatric disorders. He has a strong interest in self-help and minimal or brief intervention programs for recovering addicts. As well, he finds an interest in the cause and prevention of addiction relapse.

  1. Dr. Youssef Allami

    Youssef is a postdoctoral fellow, funded by the Alberta Gambling Research Institute (AGRI). After practicing as an addiction clinical psychologist in Quebec for a few years, he moved to Alberta to work under the supervision of Dr David Hodgins and Dr Robert Williams (at the University of Lethbridge). Currently, he studies predictors of treatment-seeking and remission from problem gambling. As complex as this may sound, this year’s biggest dilemma was choosing whether to support Morocco or Canada at the 2022 soccer world cup!

  1. Bradley Brazeau

    Brad is a second-year PhD candidate in the clinical psychology program. He completed his BSc (Hons) in psychology at the University of Saskatchewan in 2019 and his MSc in clinical psychology at the University of Calgary in 2021. Brad’s research interests include transdiagnostic models of addiction and technology-mediated real-time interventions.

  2. Ashley Ethier

    Ashley is a second year PhD student in the clinical psychology program at the University of Calgary. 

  3. Magdalen Schluter-Dixon

    Maggie is a fourth-year PhD candidate in the clinical psychology program. Maggie is currently completing her residency training. She studied psychology at the University of British Columbia where she earned her BA, and at the University of Calgary where she earned her MSc. Maggie's research interests include conceptualizations of addiction, etiological mechanisms, and reward-related decision making and impulsivity in gambling disorder.

  4. Megan Cowie

    Megan is a fourth-year PhD candidate in the clinical psychology program, Currently, she is completing her residency training. Megan studied psychology at Dalhousie University where she earned her BSc (Hons), and at the University of Calgary where she earned her MSc. Megan's research interests include evidence-based practices in addictions, and the use of contingency management for the treatment of addictive disorders.

  5. Nolan Gooding

    Nolan is a first-year PhD student in the clinical psychology program. He formerly attended the University of Lethbridge, where he completed his BSc (2022) and his MSc (2023) in psychology. Nolan’s research interests pertain broadly to addiction and problem gambling, with a specific interest in risk of harm associated with engagement in addictive behaviours and how to better predict the experience of those harm.

  1. Angela Wallace

    Angela is the Calgary coordinator of the prairie node of the OPTIMA study. She studied psychology at the University of Calgary where she earned her BA. Angela's research interests include medical and psychosocial treatments for people who use opioids, patient-centred care for people that use substances, and knowledge translation in substance use treatment.

  2. Amber Heyd

    Amber is a research assistant for the TOPP project. She received her BN from Mount Royal University and completed an MSc in Health Promotion at University of Alberta School of Public Health. Her research interests include the social epidemiology of substance use and exploring new ways of knowledge mobilization to impact policy, improve health equity and bridge the research-clinical practice gap. 

  3. Heather Nixdorff

    Heather's primary role is the TOPP project, focusing on the implementation of a guidance document for OUD treatment. She received her MSc in Environmental Public Health from the University of Alberta. Her interests include knowledge translation and stakeholder engagement in order to create meaningful and effective research.

  4. MacRae Lynch

    MacRae is a research assistant for the PRISE project. He completed an Honours in psychology at Mount Allison University and his thesis examined the nonacute effects of regular cannabis use on self-regulation. MacRae's research interests include addictive behaviours, self-regulatory processes, cannabis use, and evidence-based treatment for addiction. 

  5. Lisa Henkel

    Lisa is a project coordinator currently wrapping up the Gambling Online Self-Help study and initiating the upcoming Cross-cultural Gambling like Activities within Video Games Project. She received her BSc with Honours from the University of Calgary. Lisa's research interests include empirical study design, the convergence of gambling and video games, and self-directed treatment for addictive behaviours.
