The bulk of houses in the community of Parkdale
are bungalows, most of which were constructed
between 1949 and 1955.
Although properties are divided
into 7.5m lots, most bunglalows sit across 15m
lots.
Some bungalows have been modified to fit into the
steep escarpment to the north of the community.
Not all houses are bungalows, however. Here is
an example of a 1950s style 1 ½ storey
home.
There are also a small number of duplexes within
the Parkdale community.
In recent years, the city has
grown at an extremely rapid pace and the demand for housing has been extremely
high. Since Parkdale is located near the city center which is where a great
many Calgarians work and recreate, many of Parkdale's older homes have been
knocked down and replaced by two story infill houses. Generally, for each
house torn down, two narrow houses are
built.
Here is one very
new townhouse-style condominium
unit.
Just south-west of Parkdale
is the small community of Point McKay. With the exception of two very large
apartment blocks (shown below), Point McKay is comprised entirely of
condominiums, built between 1978 and 1982.. Their 3 storeys typify these
condominiums, with the garage located on the lower level. Each block has
three units.
