SDSN Canada’s work has been guided by three strategic directions

2022-2024
Canada’s all-of-society conference devoted to tracking progress for the SDGs. Delivered online in 2020 & 2022, online and in-person in 2023, and in-person with sessions broadcast online in 2024. More info at www.togetherensemble.ca.
- Total registration = 5,500 (online and in-person)
- Funding secured from the Government of Canada for $400,000 to deliver the conferences (100k/conference).

A national collaboration to promote the SDGs and to further embed them on campuses across the country. Events organized by individual campuses.

Convening monthly conversations on experiences and approaches to localize the SDGs in Canada. Currently over 200 members as part of this community, ranging from municipalities, academics, and community groups.
Best practices guide for post-secondary reporting on the SDGs, including case studies from across Canadian post-secondary institutions.
An online program to support university and college students across Canada to develop the expertise and skills to take action on the SDGs.
Convening faculty across Canada to share SDGs teaching ideas and recommended resources.
Measuring municipal progress on SDG 11 targets and consulting with municipalities to design an interactive dashboard to track progress toward SDG 11 targets among select cities.

2018-2022
An annual Members Meeting bringing together SDSN Canada members from across the country to share updates from the network and showcase SDG work happening at member institutions.
An 11-part video series bringing together faculty from the University of Waterloo and staff from the City of Waterloo to discuss sustainable development topics and projects within the city.
Trained 15 moderators across Canada to host the simulation on 10 member campuses as an interactive means of teaching the principles behind the SDGs and the decision-making that goes into operationalizing them at a country level.
Scoping modern and historical treaties between Canada and First Nations using comparative legal research methods to uncover whether and how these accords respond to the global SDGs and what new research questions can support the realization of key rights
Three summary briefs on vanguard city experiences and enabling environments in adopting and integrating the SDGs.
Awarded two $10,000 seed grants to support collaborative member research on achieving the SDGs within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- “Determining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on water, food and energy security in Indigenous communities, and rapidly deploying renewables technologies in response.” Collaborative research between UWaterloo and Simon Fraser University.
- “International Summer School in Societal Transformation.” Collaborative initiative between CIRODD, ULaval, Concordia, and AcadiaU.
A call to action for members to further commit to the SDGs on their campus, including hosting events, working with their leadership to embed in operations, and map SDGs expertise on campus.

Part of the Localizing the SDGs CoP, a conversation on developing Indigenous partnerships along the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of the SDGs, approaches that have worked well, and challenges to be aware of.
Featuring the launch of our guide on reporting for the SDGs and speakers whose post-secondary institutions were included in the guide as case studies.
Part of our Teaching the SDGs Community of Practice, featured a discussion from experts who shared approaches to decolonizing the curriculum in universities and colleges across Canada from both an Indigenous perspective as well as an international colonial perspective.
A half-day webinar series to explore city level implementation of the SDGs.
Partnered with Universities Canada to invite Jeffrey Sachs to give an online keynote to Canada’s university presidents and executive leadership.
Co-hosted with SDSN members CIRODD, ULaval, Concordia, and McGill to discuss the concept of sustainable innovation in Québec and the types of accelerated action that are needed to achieve the SDGs.
Co-hosted with the Center for International Sustainable Development Law to discuss how policy and law on all levels can help deliver the SDGs across Canada.
