About:
The shelter is a place where people can rest, reflect, and gather energy to take the steps they need to make safe and healthy choices in the future.
- A short term shelter (up to 3 weeks)
- Offer shelter, food, clothing, crisis counselling, referral and advocacy
- Outreach services are available to clients in the community
- Available to women, men and children affected by family violence
Services:
- Public Education program: increase awareness and decrease tolerance of violence and abuse. Anti-violence educators are available to schools, service clubs, community groups, agencies and faith communities to provide a number of workshops and presentations on family violence and related topics. This service is available free of charge, as are all shelter services.
- Early Intervention Program: The program helps families deal with the effects of living with abuse and educates them about positive parenting strategies, safety planning and abuse prevention
- Outreach Program: Outreach staff go out into the community to meet with clients where they live
- Indigenous Liaison: Shelter provides traditional teachings in counselling, smudging and talking and healing circles
- Male Outreach Program: Men can also be victims of family violence, and it can be even harder for them to get help. Wheatland Shelter provides shelter and services for male victims. In addition, the Male Domestic Abuse Outreach Program is offered through the Calgary Counselling Centre, providing counselling advocacy and support. The program includes individual and group services.
- Drumheller’s Men’s Group: This group is for men who want to change their abusive behaviour.
