The Biomedical Engineering Specialization (BMEN) allows a student to fulfill the requirements for a BSc degree in Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Geomatics, Mechanical or Software Engineering and at the same time complete a program in Biomedical Engineering.

First year Engineering students wishing to enter the Biomedical Engineering Specialization must apply for admission to the Biomedical Engineering Specialization program at the same time the choice of an engineering program is made.

Curriculum requirements for the Biomedical Engineering Specialization are listed with the requirements for each program. See also 4.1 First Year Curriculum Requirements Common to All Programs.

Note: All technical electives may not be offered each year.

All Biomedical Engineering Specialization students are required to complete a Biomedical Engineering practicum via at least one of the following options:

(a) A minimum of four (4) months of industrial work experience in a Biomedical Engineering-related company (typically co-ordinated through the Engineering Internship Office), plus either the BME Thesis (Biomedical Engineering 500) or Project (Biomedical Engineering 501) course.

(b) A minimum of four (4) months research placement in biomedical engineering (typically a summer in a BME laboratory), plus either the BME Thesis (Biomedical Engineering 500) or Project (Biomedical Engineering 501) course.

(c) Successful completion of a 4th year BME thesis (Biomedical Engineering 500).

All internship or research placements must be approved by the Centre for Bioengineering Research and Education.
