Note: Chinese 317 and 355 are given in English and no knowledge of Chinese is required.
Students wishing to take a first course in Chinese language must first submit an Enrolment Application in order to determine their level of proficiency. This form is available from the GSEA departmental office (Craigie Hall , Room C205) or at http://gsea.ucalgary.ca. Please note that the enrolment application may be submitted only once. Completion of any Chinese language course as a transfer course does NOT exempt students from submitting an Enrolment Application.
Students with no background knowledge of the Chinese language will be placed at the beginner's level (Chinese 205), while those with some background may be asked to appear for an interview and/or written Placement Assessment. There is a $20.00 fee for writing the Placement Assessment. Students will be informed of the result of their Enrolment Application by the Chinese programme advisor. Please refer to the Prior Language Knowledge section under Department Regulations.
Note: All university level prerequisites for Chinese language courses must be met with a grade of "C-" or better.
