Teaching and Learning Research and Scholarship
Educational Leaders in Residence (ELR) are responsible for developing and implementing high-impact, institutional teaching and learning projects that lead to clear outcomes and results.
Our ELRs for Teaching and Learning Research and Scholarship will work to strengthen partnerships and to build capacity for scholarship, research and leadership in teaching and learning across and beyond UCalgary.
Educational Leader in Residence, Teaching and Learning Research and Scholarship
The Educational Leader in Residence, Teaching and Learning Research and Scholarship will work to:
- Develop a Guide and a series of Learning Modules to support the development of expertise and capacity in teaching and learning inquiry, research, and scholarship across UCalgary
- Co-lead academic staff programming in collaboration with the Academic Lead (Teaching and Learning Research) such as the Teaching Scholars community of practice, and the academic staff certificate course Inquiry and Scholarship in Teaching and Learning.
- Facilitate campus conversations related to teaching and learning research, scholarship and leadership through existing campus networks and committees (e.g., Associate Deans, Teaching and Learning, GFC teaching and learning committee, TI workshops, communities of practice, and events).
- Contribute to scholarship related to teaching and learning research and leadership, including evaluating and disseminating the success and impact of initiatives implemented to strengthen teaching and learning research, scholarship and leadership capacity.
- Participate in the continuing refinement of our institutional strategy related to research, scholarship and leadership at the University of Calgary.
- Connect with other Educational Leaders in Residence, TI leadership and the VPTL to report on progress and relevant findings.
Dr. Fabian Neuhaus, PhD
Fabian Neuhaus, is an associate professor at the University of Calgary with the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape. He is the research lead for the Richard Parker Initiative (RPI).
His research interests are the temporal aspects of the urban environment and the scholarship of teaching and learning with a specific interest for signature pedagogy in particular in the context of the design disciplines - the design studio. He has worked with architecture and urban design practices in the UK and Switzerland as well as on research projects at universities in Switzerland, Germany, Canada, and the UK.
He is passionate about reconciliation and decolonizing knowledge systems.
Dr. Mindi Summers, PhD
Mindi Summers is an Associate Professor (Teaching) at the University of Calgary in the Department of Biological Sciences. Mindi partners with students to design, innovate, and study high-impact experiential teaching and learning practices.
Her collaborative work focuses on incorporating local research experiences, building relationships with interdisciplinary and community partners, and engaging students’ creativity to advance sustainability and biodiversity conservation. Mindi’s research and outreach efforts led the University of Calgary to become a designated Bee Campus in 2020.
Through this designation, she works with the campus community and The City of Calgary to promote student leadership in pollinator education and conservation. Mindi also prioritizes mentorship of new faculty, and supporting and growing community in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
Mindi is a member of the University of Calgary Teaching Academy, Conjoint Research Ethics Board, and elected division councilor of the Council on Undergraduate Research.
