As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to rapidly evolve, the University of Calgary is taking the necessary steps to ensure students, faculty and staff have clear guidance on how to safely and effectively utilize this emerging technology.

This semester, UCalgary’s new AI website allows the campus community to find helpful resources and information on all things AI. The website will continually be updated, depending on emerging trends and recommendations from subject-matter experts, to meet the needs of the community.

“We know our university community is interested in learning more about using AI and using it as a tool with day-to-day tasks and learning,” says Trevor Poffenroth, chief information officer with UCalgary Information Technologies. “Therefore, the need for AI resources and best practices is becoming more important.”

UCalgary isn’t alone. Universities across Canada are continuing to adapt to advances in AI. With these ongoing changes, it is important to inform the campus on using AI responsibly.

“As the AI landscape changes, so will our guidance," says Poffenroth. “This is an evolving space, and our goal is to ensure that our community has the resources it needs to navigate it.

“We’re actively developing best practices for AI use at UCalgary, and that work is ongoing. As new tools and challenges emerge, we’ll continue updating our guidance, so our community knows what to expect and how to use AI mindfully.”
